One of the most popular downhill treks in Bolivia and achievable by nearly everybody. A shame to miss if time allows you luxury of experiencing this fabulous and sometimes demanding adventure. Walk in the steps of the pre- Inca from barren 4.900m down a beautifully preserved stone path into the subtropical vegetation of the Yungas, where you will see citrus & banana trees, coffee and coca plantations, colorful birds and butterflies and if you are extremely lucky, you will catch a glimpse of the elusive spectacled bear staring back at you. Expect to get your feet wet in the pristine waterfall-fed stream crossings. Ending in the town of Chairo you can choose to stay in the lovely tropical town Coroico or return directly to La Paz.
Program 3 Days / 2 Nights
DAY 1: La Paz-Challapampa. Departure from La Paz until La Cumbre at 4,770 m. starting from this location, the trek will continue until the Apacheta Pass at 4,900 m. After this pass, there will be a spectacular descent for about 7 hrs. from the high Puna grasslands to the cloud forest or yungas, passing the Chukura small village at 3,750 0 and later arriving to the Challapampa Camp at 2,800 m. Lunch on the way. Dinner and Overnight at Challapampa Camping.
DAY 2: Challapampa-San Francisco. You will pass through one of the few untouched cloud forest left in Bolivia, protected by the Cotapata National Park. The trail descends through narrow valleys showing more trees, orchids, bromeliads and larger cloud forest trees. Colorful birds and butterflies could be seen. This habitat is home of the Spectacled Bear, rarely seen by visitors. Lunch on the way. After approximately another 7-hour descent, you will reach the San Francisco Camp at 2,600 m. Dinner and overnight camping.
DAY 3: San Francisco-Chairo. The trek continues down the Rio Coscapa valley where landscapes are more developed. The vegetation and the bird life is more abundant. This place will be showing more vegetation with lovely larger canopies adorned by bromeliads, mosses and orchids. After another 6-7 hour walk you will finally reach Chairo at 1,400 m. Transfer by car to Coroico. Trip back to La Paz.
