Chacaltaya and Moon Valley - Price Per Person 15USD
Chacaltaya was once the highest “ski resort” in the world.
The 5380 meter mountain is a fantastic option for a day trip from La Paz its location provides you greats views over the Cordillera Real, over to Lake Titicaca and back towards the cities of El Alto and La Paz.
The trip starts in the morning around 8.00 to 9.00 when the bus picks you up from your hotel and you start your trip from La Paz up to El Alto and onto the altiplano towards the mountain range where Chacaltaya sits. Along the way you will see alpacas and llamas grazing in the hills and views of Huayna Potosi amongst other mountains in the Cordillera Real.
The trip to Chacaltaya is just 2 hours from La Paz. Take warm cloths, as it will get cold at the top and sometimes the winds are pretty strong. There is a 15bs entrance fee at the Chalcaltaya Ski lodge. From here we take a 30 to 40 minute climb to the top. At altitude it’s a little harder than you expect, but we take our time and the effort is well woth it. At the top you are now at the same hight as Everest base camp close to 5400 meters. The views from the refuge and summit of Chalcaltaya are stunning and this is rare chance to get up this high without mountain climbing and equipment.
Valle de la Luna (the Valley of the Moon) - Located in the southern of La Paz city. The “Valley of the Moon” is landscape of eroded rock and pinnacles with a lunar like appearance. It can make for interesting photographs and a pleasant walk to view the different formations. Several species of cactus grow ups there. The tour is around a 30 minute guided walk. This area is lower than central La Paz and is much warmer. You will be back in the centre of La Paz at around 15.30 / 16.00.
