Huayna Potosi is the highest mountain of all mountains accessible from the Cordillera Real, located at 25 km away from the city of La Paz. This is Bolivia’s most popular major peak because of its imposing beauty and ease of access, as well as the fact that it’s 88m over the magic 6000m figure. It’s appealing because it can be climbed by beginners with a competent guide and technical equipment. Beginners yes, but fit beginners; it’s quite steep toward the end and it’s a tough climb.
Huayna Potosi Mountain is one of the favorite snowy mountain for climbers for its majestic characteristics, and easy to access.
PROGRAM 3 Days / 2 Nights
Day 01. Meet time at our office at 8:30 a.m. after that go on tourist transport to the refuge's share "Zongo Pass" a journey of about an hour and half. Arriving to shelter 4.700 m Huayna Potosi (Base Camp). After lunch we will start a 40-minute walking to the old glacier to practice and get used to climb, ending the practice we will return to base camp and spend the night.
After breakfast we start our trek along the Zongo dam until the trailhead is located at the top, continuing along a hillside and after 4 hours of trekking arrive at high camp (5100 m). This camp sits on a plain at the foot of the steep slope of ice which will scale the next day.
This day we begin the climb very early at 1:00 a.m. We depart with lit lanterns, leaving the High Camp to the summit of Huayna Potosi. (6.088 m), after 5-6 hours of climbing to reach the top in order to appreciate the wonderful view of the highlands of the Cordillera Real and Titicaca Lake, and witness the sun breach the distant edge of the planet.
After some time here soaking up the spender we will make our descend to base camp, to take the vehicle and back to the city. Typically we get back mid to late afternoon.
